Sugar Skulls Fall to Rival Rattlers on the Road
Glendale, AZ – The Tucson Sugar Skulls battled hard in a rivalry matchup against the Arizona Rattlers on Sunday afternoon at Desert Diamond Arena but ultimately fell 66-14. Despite strong moments on both sides of the ball and flashes of offensive momentum, turnovers and Arizona’s explosive offense proved difficult to overcome.
The rivalry game opened with intensity from both teams, as Tucson’s defense came out aggressive and forced a turnover on downs deep in Sugar Skulls territory during Arizona’s opening drive. Tucson quickly answered with a promising offensive series led by quarterback Tasleem Wilson and running back Tavion Thomas, driving inside the Arizona 10-yard line before the drive stalled. Arizona capitalized shortly after when quarterback Drew Powell rushed for a 27-yard touchdown to give the Rattlers an early lead.
Arizona continued to build momentum throughout the first quarter, adding another score while their defense limited Tucson’s opportunities offensively. The Sugar Skulls responded early in the second quarter when Wilson connected with Taron Keith on a 20-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 14-7 and giving Tucson energy on the road. Wilson continued to create opportunities through the air and on the ground, while receivers Gourney Sloan and Jaivian Lofton contributed key receptions to move the offense downfield.
However, Arizona’s offense answered quickly behind touchdown receptions from Arland Bruce and additional points from kicker Matthew Cook, who added two deuces to extend the lead. Tucson attempted to close the gap before halftime with a late offensive push, but an interception near the goal line ended the drive and sent the Sugar Skulls into halftime trailing 32-7.
The Sugar Skulls opened the second half with renewed energy as Wilson led a five-play scoring drive that ended with a seven-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown brought momentum back to Tucson and showcased Wilson’s ability to extend plays and lead the offense under pressure. Wilson finished the game with 117 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and 42 rushing yards, while Sloan led Tucson receivers with five catches for 40 yards.
Defensively, Tucson continued to battle despite Arizona’s offensive rhythm. Defensive backs Bri’On Murray, Djimon Brooks, and Zachariah Twadorsky all made key efforts throughout the game as the Sugar Skulls worked to slow one of the league’s top offenses. Still, Powell and the Rattlers continued to capitalize on field position and offensive execution, with Powell finishing the game responsible for six total touchdowns, including four rushing scores. Arizona also forced multiple turnovers, including a late interception by defensive back Yahsyn McKee, helping the Rattlers maintain control through the final quarter.
Although the final score did not favor Tucson, the game highlighted the team’s resilience and determination against a high-ranking rival. The performance of new quarterback Tasleem Wilson also continued to show promise as the Sugar Skulls look to build momentum moving forward this season.
Up next, the Sugar Skulls remain on the road as they travel to face the Quad City Steamwheelers at Vibrant Arena at The MARK in Moline, Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for Friday, May 15 at 5:00 p.m. MST.
