Tucson Sugar Skulls hold on for first win of season over New Mexico Chupacabras
The Tucson Sugar Skulls captured their first win of the 2026 Indoor Football League season in dramatic fashion, holding off a late surge from the New Mexico Chupacabras to secure a 45–40 victory. What started as a dominant performance quickly turned into a battle, but Tucson proved they could finish when it mattered most.
The Sugar Skulls came out firing, building an early 28–6 lead midway through the second quarter and taking control of the game on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Tucson found rhythm early, while the defense applied pressure and forced key stops to create separation. It looked like it would be smooth sailing but New Mexico had other plans.
The Chupacabras clawed their way back into the game behind quarterback Ja’rome Johnson, who began to find momentum late in the first half and carried it into the second. After Tucson’s strong start, Johnson connected with La’james White in the flat at the 15-yard line, where White broke through multiple defenders and powered into the end zone to cut into the deficit and ignite the home crowd.
Tucson answered right back in explosive fashion. Quarterback Draylen Ellis delivered a deep strike to Brian Smith, who hauled in the long touchdown to push the lead back to a three-score margin and keep the Sugar Skulls in control heading into the second half.
Still, New Mexico refused to go away. The Chupacabras continued to chip away at the lead, eventually closing the gap to just four points late in the fourth quarter. With 6:28 remaining and New Mexico driving while trailing 38–34, the game hung in the balance. Johnson took a shot downfield toward Isaah Crocker in the end zone, but Tucson’s defense came up with the biggest play of the night. Bri’On Murray stepped in front of the pass near midfield, intercepting it and returning it all the way to the New Mexico 15-yard line. The takeaway shifted momentum back to Tucson and set up a crucial scoring opportunity that helped seal the win.
The Sugar Skulls’ ability to respond to adversity and make plays in key moments ultimately secured their first victory of the season a statement win that showcased both their offensive firepower and defensive resilience.
Now, Tucson turns its attention to this weekend as they return home to the Tucson Convention Center for their next test.
