Tucson Sugar Skulls secure crucial Boneyard win against Orlando Pirates
Tucson, AZ – The Sugar Skulls came out on top against the Orlando Pirates, 53-37. In a
game with several turnovers and unpredictable moments, Tucson’s offense stayed
consistent as its defense fought to limit scoring, resulting in a monumental win that
snapped Tucson’s losing streak.
The energy of the Boneyard was high from kickoff, and Tucson immediately opened the
game with urgency, with a series of efficient offensive plays. New quarterback recruit
Ja’Rome Johnson flashed his potential by securing a touchdown for the Skulls in the
opening moments of the game. Orlando was quick to respond, scoring their first
touchdown and setting the stage for a tight offensive battle between the teams.
Tucson’s offense ended the first quarter with two more touchdowns, and the Skull’s
defense successfully prevented Orlando from scoring again, ending the quarter with a
score of 20-7.
The second quarter opened with the Orlando Pirates scoring their second touchdown,
slimming Tucson’s lead to 20-14. Tucson’s momentum began to slow, providing
increased opportunities for Orlando to score. Though Tucson secured two more
touchdowns, the Pirates fought hard to tighten the gap, and by the end of the first half,
the game was tied, 34-34.
Tucson entered the second half with renewed momentum, recovering a live ball as it
bounced off a goalpost. Tucson turned the newfound possession into a touchdown as
running back Brandon Mackey scored his third touchdown of the matchup. The third
quarter ended with the Skulls in the lead, 47-37. Defensive backs Chucky Wilson and
Bri’On Murray lead the defense’s surge in power as Tucson’s defense successfully
limited the Pirates to only 3 points for the quarter.
The roar of the Boneyard was loud as the final quarter began. Tucson’s defense
continued to display its dominance by preventing the Pirates’ offense from scoring. In an
incredible play, defensive back Ahmad Lyons snagged an interception and carried it 42
yards across the field. Tucson secured two field goals, bringing the score up to 53-37
and resulting in a win for the Skulls.
